WINNIPEG – Auditor General Tyson Shtykalo says he is concerned with the government’s continued lack of progress implementing the audit recommendations made by his office. The details are contained in a new report, Follow-up of Previously Issued Audit Recommendations, released today.

“I recognize some of our recommendations take time to implement, and must be balanced with other priorities, including the added challenges brought on by COVID-19,” Shtykalo said. “However, I am troubled that so many recommendations remain outstanding, particularly after the third and final follow up.”

The Office of the Auditor General follows up on the status of its past recommendations for 3 consecutive years, beginning about 18 months after being issued. Today’s report gives the implementation status for 114 past recommendations. This is the third and final follow-up for 72 of the recommendations. More than half of those are still in progress (40 recommendations).

The Legislative Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee holds audited entities accountable for the implementation of Auditor General recommendations. Shtykalo said he is hopeful new processes put in place by the PAC last fall will improve this oversight process. The committee now asks audited entities to develop action plans within 90 days of an Auditor General’s report being issued. Following the Auditor General’s third and final follow up, the committee may also request progress reports from audited entities on the status of outstanding recommendations.
